Phonola-Hoover Project
Wie von Geisterhand gespielt bewegen sich die Tasten des Klaviers und Musik erklingt. Denn die Phonola ist ein selbstspielendes Klavier der Firma Hupfeld aus dem Jahre 1913. Solche Automaten wurden in Leipzig zu dieser Zeit zehntausendfach gebaut und in alle Welt exportiert. Für ihren pneumatischen Betrieb musste der Spieler damals wie bei einer Nähmaschine in die Pedale treten. Heute übernimmt ein Staubsauger diese kräftezehrende Aufgabe.
As if played by magic, the keys of the piano move and music resounds. The Phonola is a self-playing piano made by the Hupfeld company in 1913. At that time, tens of thousands of such automatons were built in Leipzig and exported all over the world. For their pneumatic operation, the player had to pedal like a sewing machine back then. Today, a hoover takes over this energy-sapping task.
Infolge des Corona-Lockdowns mussten viele Kultureinrichtungen schließen. Die Bundesbeauftragte für Kultur und Medien hat darauf mit dem Sofortprogramm NEUSTART reagiert. Es fördert kreative Neuansätze der Soziokultur. Das innovative Vorhaben der Forschungsstelle DIGITAL ORGANOLOGY mit der Phonola trägt dazu bei, das Musikinstrumentenmuseum der Universität Leipzig in den Wissenschaftsbetrieb von Forschung, Lehre und Transfer zurückzuführen. Die Idee dazu und alle Vorarbeiten entstanden im BMBF-Projekt TASTEN.
As a result of the Corona Lockdown in spring 2020, many cultural institutions had to close. The Bundesbeauftragte für Kultur und Medien has responded to this with the NEUSTART emergency programme. This promotes creative new approaches in socio-culture. The innovative project of the DIGITAL ORGANOLOGY research centre with the Phonola contributes to bringing the Musikinstrumentenmuseum der Universität Leipzig back into the academic world of research, teaching and transfer. The idea for this and all the preliminary work came about in the BMBF project TASTEN.
